Thomas was born in 1800 in Daresbury and his christening took place there on May 18th, 1800. Thomas' father was Ralph Brereton and his mother was Alice Owen.  His paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Martha Jennion. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named William, Ralph, Martha, Ann, Mary, Esther, Elizabeth, Ellen and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
