Sarah's father was Ralph Brereton and her mother was Alice Owen.  Her paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Martha Jennion. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, Ralph, Martha, Ann, Mary, Esther, Elizabeth and Ellen.  She was the youngest of the ten children.

‌Sarah and Jonathan were married in a religious ceremony on September 19th, 1847 in Runcorn.²
