Mary was born in March 1839 in Great Budworth.1  Mary's father was Ralph Brereton and her mother was Margaret Whitlow.  Her paternal grandparents were Ralph Brereton and Alice Owen. She had a brother and a sister, named James and Jane.  She was the oldest of the three known children.
