Mary was born in April 1797 in Daresbury and her christening took place there on April 17th, 1797.1  Mary's father was George Brereton and her mother was Mary Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Martha Jennion. She had two brothers and three sisters, named George, Thomas, Ann, Martha and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the six children.
