Martha was born in November 1802 in Daresbury and her christening took place there on November 11th, 1802.1  Martha's father was George Brereton and her mother was Mary Smith.  Her paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Martha Jennion. She had two brothers and three sisters, named George, Thomas, Mary, Ann and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the six children.
