Emma was born in December 1828 in Odd Rode and her baptism took place on December 7th, 1828 at Christ Church, Alsager.1 2  Emma's father was George Brereton and her mother was Mary Keen.  Her paternal grandparents were George Brereton and Mary Jackson. She had three brothers and two sisters, named William, John, George, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
