Ethel was born in June 1897 in Great Lever.¹

Ethel's father was Benjamin Booth and her mother was Ann Ellen Tomlinson. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Booth and Margaret Brooks; her maternal grandparents were William Tomlinson and Mary Ann Barnes. She had a brother named Benjamin. She was the older of the two children.

- There is no evidence that Ethel re-married. There are two possible deaths (both discounted):

  The death at Q1/1958 at Leicester is a perfect match on age, but with is for "Ethel M" and Ethel had no second christian name. It seemed likely as her married son Arthur lived in Leicester. However this is Ethel M Grant who married Clifford M Westby in 1920 at Leicester.
  
  The death of Ethel Westby Q3/1960 at Sheffield is also a perfect match, and daughter Edna Westby (born 4 Aug 1914) also died in 1992 at Sheffield. However, this could also to Ethel Thorp who married Robert Westby in 1948 at Shaffield.

General Notes
- In 1914, Ethel may have married either Arthur Greenhalgh or Arthur W Westby (two Bolton RO marriages) or Arthur Bennett in 1915. There is a 14cM DNA match to Isobel Goatcher confirming Westby.
  
  In 1920 Arthur William George Westby was killed in WW1.
  
  What happened then? Did Ethel remarry (and have more children)? There are 7 Bolton marriages for "Ethel Booth" in the following 10 years, but only one for Ethel Westby to a Herbert W Berry at Horwich in 1838. However that Ethel was born in 1914.
  
  6 May 1943, Ethel Westby and Arthur Wm Westby were Middleton, listed as next of kin on a WW1 Pension Record Card for Arthur Wm Westby.
  
  After 1843 the famiily may have moved to Leicester. It seems Edna and Arthur both married in Leicester (in 1836 and 1842). However it may be Ethel stayed behind and married George H Hall
  .
