Edwin was born in 1842. Edwin's father was Joseph Blackburn and his mother was Ruth Berry. His paternal grandparents were Michael Blackburn and Hannah Eastwood. He had three brothers and a sister, named Luke, George, Thomas and Hannah. He was the second oldest of the five children.
