Maria was born in 1834 in Hawarden.¹ Maria's father was Jonathan Bennett and her mother was Mary Jones. Her paternal grandparents were Benjamin Bennett and Elizabeth Millington. She had eight brothers and two sisters, named John, Benjamin, Joseph, Jonathan, Samuel, William, Edward, Thomas, Elizabeth and Mary. She was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.
