Mary's father was George Batarbee and her mother was Mary Richards. Her paternal grandparents were John Batterbury and Elizabeth Kempster; her maternal grandparents were Richard Richards and Anne Phythian. She had three brothers and a sister, named George, Richard, Thomas and Anne. She was the second oldest of the five children.
