Dorothy's father was David Atkinson and her mother was Sarah Wilkinson.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Atkinson and Agnes Storey; her maternal grandparents were John Wilkinson and Dorothy Wilkinson. She had a brother and seven sisters, named Robert, Rachel, Sarah, Isabel, Hannah, Margaret, Agnes and Elizabeth.  She was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  She died at the age of 65 on February 20th, 1759 in Birkrigg Park.  She was buried on February 22nd, 1759 in Westmorland.¹
