James was born on December 19th, 1844 in Heywood and his baptism took place on September 29th, 1844 at St. Luke (Heywood).1 2  James' father was George Astin and his mother was Hannah Booth. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, Sarah and Maria.  He was the fourth oldest of the five children.
