Thomas was born on June 6th, 1840 in Heywood and his baptism took place on June 28th, 1840 at St. Luke (Heywood).1  Thomas' father was George Astin and his mother was Hannah Booth. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Sarah and Maria.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
