Robert was born in January 1843 in Little Bolton.1  Robert's father was James Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, Abel, Betsy and Betsy.  He was the youngest of the six children.
