John was born in July 1826 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on July 7th, 1826 in Bolton.1  John's father was James Ashcroft and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Edge. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Abel, Robert, Betsy and Betsy.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died in July 1826 in Little Bolton.  His burial was on July 23rd, 1826 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2
