Pieter was born on July 11th, 1908.  Pieter's father was Jan Thomas Martens and his mother was Heila Magdalena Elizabeth  Botha.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Cornelius Martens and Margaretha Susanna Cloete. He had two brothers named Jacobus and Jan .  He is the youngest of the three children.
