Jacobus was born on April 29th, 1887.  Jacobus' father was Jan Thomas Martens and his mother was Heila Magdalena Elizabeth  Botha.  His paternal grandparents were Jacobus Cornelius Martens and Margaretha Susanna Cloete. He had two brothers named Jan  and Pieter.  He is the oldest of the three children.
