Jan was born on November 30th, 1859.  Jan's father was Cornelius (Basheesa) Jacobus Martens and his mother was Victoria Liversage.  His paternal grandfather was Jan  Thomas Martens and his paternal grandmother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, Cornelis (Niel), Jacobus (Klein Koos), Harriet  and Anna.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 59 on January 14th, 1919.
