Anna was born on April 5th, 1874.  Anna's father was Cornelius (Basheesa) Jacobus Martens and her mother was Victoria Liversage.  Her paternal grandfather was Jan  Thomas Martens and her paternal grandmother is Anna Maria Isabella Coetzee. She had four brothers and a sister, named Jan, Samuel, Cornelis (Niel), Jacobus (Klein Koos) and Harriet .  She is the youngest of the six children.
