Helena was born on April 30th, 1905.  Helena's father was Jacobus (Klein Koos) Corneli(u)s Martens and her mother is Maria Francina Scheepers.  Her paternal grandparents were Cornelius (Basheesa) Jacobus Martens and Victoria Liversage. She had three brothers named Cornelis (Neils), Johannes and Fredrick.  She is the second youngest of the four children.
