Gert was born on December 27th, 1888.  Gert's father was Jan  Thomas Martens and his mother was Susannah Maria van Rooyen.  His paternal grandparents were Jan (Tommie) Thomas Martens and Anna  Catharina Elizabeth Pretorius. He had a brother and two sisters, named Jan (Tom Nkonka), Johannes and Anna.  He was the youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 64 on July 5th, 1953.
