Cornelius was born on March 7th, 1888.  Cornelius' father was Jan Thomas Martens and his mother was Susannah Engela Vermaak.  His paternal grandparents were Cornelius (Basheesa) Jacobus Martens and Victoria Liversage. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Jacobus, Thomas, Christiaan, Susanna (San), Victoria, Johanna, Harriet , Maria and Anna. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Johannes and Regina.  He died at the age of 31 on March 24th, 1919.
