James was born in 1889.  James' father was Henry Gilson and his mother was Louisa.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Gilson and Eliza. He had nine sisters named Louisa, Annie, Rose, Mabel, Ellen, Hilda, Ada, Jessie and Florence.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
