Hilda was born in 1893.  Hilda's father was Henry Gilson and her mother was Louisa.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Gilson and Eliza. She had a brother and eight sisters, named James, Louisa, Annie, Rose, Mabel, Ellen, Ada, Jessie and Florence.  She was the seventh oldest of the ten children.
