John Howard was born in July 1855.  John Howard's father was Oliver Perry Jackson and his mother was Susan Jane Powell.  His paternal grandparents were William Jackson and Sarah Sally McSwain; his maternal grandparents were Lovely Abraham Powell and Sarah Allen.  He was the fifth of seven children.  He had four brothers and two sisters, named James Lewis, William Allen, David Daniel, Durrett W., Susan Jane and Margaret Ann.  He died at the age of 59 on March 26th, 1915.
