James was born in 1782.  James' father was John Sr. Jackson and his mother was Mary Elizabeth Hodges.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Jackson Sr. and Ann Jarvis.  He was the youngest of twelve children.  He had two brothers and nine sisters, named John Jackson, Joseph Joe, Agnes, Susanna, Mary, Jeannie, Ann, Elizabeth, Nancy, Martha and Patsy.
