William was born in 1825.  William's father was John Samuel Asbell and his mother was Sarah Bicknell.  His paternal grandparents were William Asbell Sr. and Elizabeth Moore; his maternal grandparents were Thomas E. Bicknell III and Mary Nancy Asbill Reeder.  He was the third of thirteen children.  He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Harrison, Henry, John, David, Sylvester, James, Alford, Washington, Ellen, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah Louisa.
