David was born in 1830.  David's father was John Samuel Asbell and his mother was Sarah Bicknell.  His paternal grandparents were William Asbell Sr. and Elizabeth Moore; his maternal grandparents were Thomas E. Bicknell III and Mary Nancy Asbill Reeder.  He was the fifth of thirteen children.  He had eight brothers and four sisters, named Harrison, Henry, William, John, Sylvester, James, Alford, Washington, Ellen, Mary, Elizabeth and Sarah Louisa.
