Mary was born in 1840.  Mary's father was John Samuel Asbell and her mother was Sarah Bicknell.  Her paternal grandparents were William Asbell Sr. and Elizabeth Moore; her maternal grandparents were Thomas E. Bicknell III and Mary Nancy Asbill Reeder.  She was the eleventh of thirteen children.  She had nine brothers and three sisters, named Harrison, Henry, William, John, David, Sylvester, James, Alford, Washington, Ellen, Elizabeth and Sarah Louisa.
