Geesje was born on August 14th, 1844 in Wapserveen.1  Geesje's father was Jan Harms Veenstra and her mother was Grietje Bartelds Oost.  Her paternal grandparents were Harm Jans Veenstra and Geesjen Klaassen Haveman; her maternal grandparents were Barteld Hilberts Oost and Grietje Jacobs Punt. She had three brothers and a sister, named Barteld, Harm, Egbert and Grietje.  She was the oldest of the five children.
