Barteld was born on February 27th, 1846.  Barteld's father was Jan Harms Veenstra and his mother was Grietje Bartelds Oost.  His paternal grandparents were Harm Jans Veenstra and Geesjen Klaassen Haveman; his maternal grandparents were Barteld Hilberts Oost and Grietje Jacobs Punt. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Harm, Egbert, Geesje and Grietje.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 17 on March 24th, 1863 in Kalteren (Diever).1
