Jan was born in May 1759 in Oosthuizen. Jan's father was Claas Melisz Spaans and his mother was Maartje Sijmons Paauw / Pauw.  His paternal grandfather was Melis Spaans; his maternal grandfather was Sijmens Paauw. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Melis, Sijmen, Cornelis, Cornelis, Sijmen, Sijmen, Vrouwtje , Aagje and Aagje.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
