Robert was born in 1714 in , Nottinghamshire, , England.  Robert's father was Thomas Dexter and his mother was Anne Bexon.  His maternal grandparents were Richard Bexon and Ann. He had three brothers and five sisters, named George, Thomas, Joseph, Ann, Mary, Sara, Elizabeth and Susana.  He was the second youngest of the nine children.
