Robert was born on June 8th, 1851 in Port Adelaide, SA.1   Robert's father was Palmer OCKENDEN and his mother was Emma MARSHALL.  His paternal grandparents were William OCKENDEN and Elizabeth HILLS. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Palmer, Harry, Frances, Emma, Agnes, Clara and Catherine.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1852.2
