http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/56539123?searchTerm=ockendenOn Friday, another of the very few women pioneers of South Australia passed away in the person of Mrs. Emma Ockenden. With her husband, who died three years ago, she left her native town of Littlehampton, Sussex, England in August 1838 in the barque Resource, Captain Boyle, and after a voyage of nearly six months arrived in Holdfast Bay in January 1839, with their first baby six weeks old.
Many are the tales they have related of the hardships in those early days, and the fear they sometimes had of the tribes of naked natives who surrounded their huts carrying spears and waddies. The white women would sit inside and tremble, many a time wishing themselves back in their English homes.
Soon after their arrival Colonel Light died and with the whole population, Mr. and Mrs. Ockenden attended his funeral. Mrs. Ockenden had never been out of South Australia since she landed and has left ninety-one descendants; - Mrs.S.F.Bailey of Coromandel Valley; Mrs.J.W.Weidenhofer of Broken Hill; Mrs. Furnel Taylor of Wallaroo, daughters; Mr. W.M. Ockenden of Clare; Mr. Palmer Ockenden of Cheltenham ,Victoria; Mr.H.G.Ockenden of Mannum, sons; forty-one grandchildren and forty-four great-grandchildren.
The burial took place on Sunday at the Wallaroo Cemetery, where the remains of Mr. Ockenden lie. The Rev. John Lloyd officiated and was assisted by Rev. V.Thomas.
