James was born on April 9th, 1865 in Lefevre Peninsula, SA.1   James' father was Henry Thomas James MATTHEWS and his mother was Caroline FLEET.  His paternal grandparents were Henry MATTHEWS and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Thomas FLEET and <Unknown>. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Samuel, Arthur, Arthur, Herbert, Margaret, Typhena, Diolinda, Elizabeth, Clara, Amelia and Letitie.  He was the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
