Candace Myrtle Jennings was born in Plymouth on the 13 Aug 1904. She was the daughter of Albion George Jennings and Martha nee Hendra. She was one (it is thought) of eleven children some of whom died at birth and were never recorded. The others were...Ida born 1896, Ivy born 1897 (died at 1 yr), Gwendoline born1898, George born 1901, Irene born 1909 (died at 14 months) and Leonard born1911 (died at 3 months).  So she was the youngest of the four surviving children. The family lived in the Prince Rock area of Plymouth. Candace who was generally known as Dace worked at dressmaking and tailoring and served an apprenticeship at a Plymouth store called Yeo's. She married GeorgeEdward James Northmore Hoodless at StPeters Church Plymouth on 14th July 1928.The couple had Three children. 1. Melville born 11 Sept 1929. 2. Sylvia Candace born 12 Sep 1931. 3 Darla Mae born 21 Feb 1945. The wartime years were difficult for her as they were for most women. It was not unusual after an air raid for  many of the windows to have been blown out and the gas and electricity gone. George turned a large biscuit tin into a makeshift oven and stood it in the grate in front of the coal fire. Roast dinners and pasties etc were cooked in that little oven and there was one occasion when nine people were fed from it. (Candace's parents and her brother George lived in the same house at that time). She was very good at knitting, probably having been taught by her Mother and always had a sweater or cardigan or suchlike on the needles.   Candace was left a widow in1956 when George died of lung cancer.  She had heartbreak too when her youngest child, Darla also died of cancer at the age of 28.  By 1980 her health was not good and she had to go into a residential home.  She died at Seymour NursingHome Plymouth 20 Aug 1985. She is buried with George at Efford CemeteryPlymouth.
