    Riddle - Mrs. Clara Waldron Pierce Riddle, eldest daughter of Mr. Lovick Pierce, Jr., and Mrs. Sarah Turner Pierce, was born at Sunshine, the home of her grandfather, Bishop Geo. F. Pierce, January 5, 1865, and died in Atlanta, Ga., December 29, 1898. She was converted, and united with the church at Sparta, when barely thirteen years of age, and was graduated from the Wesleyan Female College at eighteen. She was married to Mr. John W. Riddle, of Columbus, November 27, 1884. These dates are the points which determine the straight line by which a singularly beautiful spirit traveled from earth to heaven. The writer lived in her father's home when Clara was a child of only ten years. She was then a perfect specimen of childish beauty, innocence and ?sness. In later years he was her ?r when lovely maidenhood had ?ed the bright promise of her ?hood, and innocence had been ?eded by piety. Still later he witnessed the noble, calm, strong woman ?y which she adorned the place ?e and mother. He saw her when ?ss had wasted and pain had tormented her to the very gates of death. ?thus familiarly acquainted with ?e chapters of her history, he is able to speak with perfect knowledge and truthfulness when he says her ? was beautiful in its simplicity of ? steadiness of consecration, and triumph over adversity. It was a life ?ny of its early ancestry and of ?heavenly parentage. Serene fidelity ?ery relation of life was so characteristic of her from her very childhood, that it seemed she enjoyed a ? of inherited piety from her birth. Devotion to God and duty appeared to be almost spontaneous and effortless with her. Nor could the excruciating pains of protracted illness disturb the serenity of her faith or disquiet her deep? repose of soul. The surrender of her will to God's purposes, which had been the habit of life in days of gladness, made submission easy in lingering months of suffering. The heaven which lay all around her infancy was not far away at life's close, for the dear child lived always in easy call of the heavenly home. And now as this my little sister has passed within the gates to join them who walk in white, among whom there have come to be so many I loved, I feel as did Bunyan when his pilgrim passed out of sight and the gates were closed behind him, "Which when I saw, I wished I were among them." - W.
