  • Mrs. Ann M. Pierce, widow of the late Bishop Pierce, died at Sunshine, on Tuesday last, and was buried in the Sparta cemetery on the day following. She was 78 years and a few days old. Her decline was gradual, and she just seemed to fade away. She was an examplar of the purest, truest womanhood. In all of life's varied relations she filled the full measure of Christian duty. In the record of her life of gentle and pious trustfulness her children and children's children have a precious and enduring inheritance.
    
    A Good Woman.
    All that was mortal of the widow of the late Bishop Pierce has just been interred in the grave of her husband, near Sparta. In 1833 George Foster Pierce met Ann Maria Waldron in Savannah. He wrote of her, "She was small, spry, active, elastic as a willow twig, and buoyant as a bird upon the wing." When the young Methodist minister left Savannah with his bride they mustered together $16 for the pilgrimage of half a century.
    Bishop Pierce afterward said of his wife: "I might have found a more beautiful maiden, one of more literary culture, but a truer woman, a better wife, a more prudent counsellor, a wiser manager, a more tidy housekeeper, I could not have found between Tybee lighthouse [southernmost part of Georgia] and Rabun Gap [northeast corner of Georgia]."
