  • "The Pierce's and their Prosperity" - First proven ancestor (p. 8) - Probably had been in the Conetoe, NC area at least since 1735, for there is a deed filed on May 13, 1735 in Bertir County, NC selling 100 acres of land, lying south of the Morrotuck River (the Indian name for Roanoke) to William Barden (p. 36-37) - Warren Andrews' will (probated 2/28/1774 in Tyrrell County (later Martin County) NC) shows that Martha Andrews married a Mr. Pierce. From the census of 1767 in Tyrrell County it is learned that Phillip Pierce's wife was named Martha. - It is known that he had four children, and from a deed conveying title of a slave named Tony, we know that Martha Andrews' family was Phillip Pierce, husband, Andrew and Lovick Pierce, sons, and Rhoda and Winnifred, daughters. (p. 37). The deed was filed on October 16, 1786 recording the sale of a negro named Toney to Elian Bryan for 50 pounds (p. 44). - His name appeared in the Book of Rights (NC Archives, SS-906). p44 - He was granted land in Tyrrell County - unfortunately the exact date on this grant is missing but it must have been after the year 1760 because he declared six whites in his family - himself, Martha and four children, and his fourth child was born about 1760-61. p. 44 - Acquired land from John MacDonald.
