Mary was born in 1821 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England. Mary's father was William Whiting and her mother was Mary Parsons. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Parsons and Betty Harris. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas Parsons, Thomas Parsons, Elizabeth and Ann Parrsons. She was the oldest of the five children.-
