Mary was born in 1799 in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, England.  Mary's father was Thomas Parsons and her mother was Betty Harris.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Parsons and Sarah Unknown; her maternal grandparents were George Harris and Ann Unknown. She had seven brothers and two sisters, named George, George, William, John, John, Henry, Thomas, Elizabeth and Ann.  She was the second youngest of the ten children. She had a half-brother named Thomas.
