Marion was born in 1863 in Coatbridge, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Marion's father was William Thomson and her mother was Marion Dickson Clarkson. Her paternal grandparents were William Robertson Thomson and Elizabeth Sneddon. She had five brothers named William, James, David, John and Benjamin. She was the youngest of the six children.-
