Benjamin was born about 1860 in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire, England.

Benjamin's father was William Thomson and his mother was Marion Dickson Clarkson. His paternal grandparents were William Robertson Thomson and Elizabeth Sneddon. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, James, David, John and Marion. He was the second youngest of the six children. He died on May 28th, 1870 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
