Robert was born in 1897 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Robert's father was Alexander (Sanny) Tait Sinclair and his mother was Janet Spense McKean. His paternal grandparents were Robert Sinclair and Ann Purdie Falconer Tait; his maternal grandparents were Robert McKean and Magdalena Paterson. He had two sisters named Magdalene and Annie. He was the oldest of the three children. He had a half-sibling of unknown gender named Unknown.-
