Alexander's father was John Tait and his mother was Ann Dalrymple Falconer. His paternal grandparents were George Tait and Alison Barrowman; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Falconer and Mary White. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, John, Ann and Jean. He was the youngest of the five children. He died due to heart disease, Desease of heart and lungs, at the age of 56 on March 25th, 1858 in Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. He was buried on March 27th, 1858 in Calton Cemetry, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
