Janet was born on May 11th, 1811 in Hamilton, Glasgow, Lanarkshire Scotland and her baptism took place there on May 19th, 1811.

Janet's father was Alexander (or Ramsey) Smith and her mother was Janet (or Ann) Purdie. Her paternal grandparents were Gavin (Gaven) Smith and Christian Reid; her maternal grandparents were James Purdie and Eliza Smith. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Gavin, John, Alexander, Elizabeth, Christian, Sarah and Mary. She was the fourth oldest of the eight children. She died at the age of 64 on June 12th, 1875 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
