Christian was born on March 12th, 1809 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Christian's father was Alexander (or Ramsey) Smith and her mother was Janet (or Ann) Purdie. Her paternal grandparents were Gavin (Gaven) Smith and Christian Reid; her maternal grandparents were James Purdie and Eliza Smith. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Gavin, John, Alexander, Elizabeth, Janet, Sarah and Mary. She was the third oldest of the eight children.
