Janet was born on November 25th, 1876 in Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland. Janet's father was Robert McKean and her mother was Magdalena Paterson.  Her maternal grandparents were Matthew Paterson and Jean Bieth (Bicket ). She had two sisters named Jane Bicket  and Rachel.  She was the second oldest of the three children.
