Mary was born on July 1st, 1839. Mary's father was John Elder and her mother was Mary Nairne Aitchison. Her paternal grandparents were John (or William) and Elizabeth Cleghorn; her maternal grandparents were William Aitchison and Elizabeth Nairne. She had three brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Nairne Guthrie, Elizabeth Aitchison and Margaret.-
